Rolling Rt. 66 Proper!
Apr 12, 2019
Pre-day of actually beginning my trip to Grand Prairie. Sam Murry, friend of Bob Lile and owner of Gilligan’s Route 66 has graciously allowed me to tag along with the group from Chicago back to Tucumcari. So roughly half of the trip I need to complete my book: I am Rt 66.
June and I are packing. I made a list of things and she checked it and I checked it to make sure I have all I need and then some for the trip. Batteries are charging, camera bag is open and all pockets have gone through. Camera Sensor cleaned. I am taking with me a Pentax Sportamatic. I don’t know if I will use it much but I am taking with me 4 rolls of film.
We have covered most of Texas and Oklahoma and a large part of Texas as far as Route 66 goes for my book. We are beginning the Trip down Route 66 in Chicago. Bob and I are taking a circuitous route via Grand Prairie to pick up two old classic cars. The way Sam does his trip is to rent convertible mustangs per couple. He drives a van filled with supplies and luggage if need be. However, for this trip, there are two couples that request classics and Sam has found a 1966 Olds and a 1977 Mercury Marquis.
The goal of this trip is twofold for me. To travel the entirety of Rt. 66 and to photograph the most artistic and iconic places. And to get as many Portraits of people on Rt 66 without any prejudice. Meaning if we meet them on Rt 66 they are game we will get their portrait.
The forecast between here and Grand Prairie is not great. In Fact, here in Amarillo, the forecast for the morning is freezing rain and snow but no matter, tomorrow at 5:00 am we are rolling toward Route 66 via Grand Prairie.
Starting tomorrow
I am Rt 66
